A manufacturer of laundry
appliances planned to introduce a front-load washer with a
high-speed spin cycle. Since an out-of-balance condition in the
spin cycle at high-speed had the potential to damage the
machine, the manufacturer sought an accelerometer. Existing
accelerometers on the market were considered expensive and did
not have the capability to switch high currents at 110VAC.

Cherry developed and patented a
high-current electro-mechanical accelerometer consisting of a
snap-action switch and an actuator mass that is held in place by
magnetic attraction. A G-force of sufficiently high value
overcomes the magnetic attraction of the sliding mass to a fixed
magnet and allows the mass to travel down a shaft and actuate
the switch.

A patented
magnetic tuning process allows Cherry to accurately specify the
G-threshold for each device. Unique in-house G-force testing
capabilities ensure 100% adherence to spec.
