A manufacturer of tree harvesting equipment needed an encoder to measure the cut length of tree limbs passing through the machine. This manufacturer had experience with magnetic encoders but had found that such devices could not survive the extraordinary high shock and vibration of the application.
Cherry developed a magnetic incremental rotary encoder in anodized aluminum housing and sealed it against dust and moisture. Electronic components were fully isolated from mechanical components. The device was designed and tested to survive 200G shock loads and 75G vibration at 50 to 2000Hz.
Finite element analysis and magnetic modeling enabled virtual prototyping of the design. Cherry’s extensive experience with the encapsulation of electronics for rugged environments resulted in a product that far exceeded the performance of those offered by competitors.
